The major survey by the world’s largest travel site TripAdvisor showed that if money was no object New Zealand would be the country British holidaymakers would most want to visit.
The top bucket list country was unveiled as part of a major survey - less than a week after the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge finished their royal tour Down-Under.
Australia was named as the second most desirable location in the world and the Caribbean ranked in third place.
Dream holiday destinations
TripAdvisor quizzed 5,000 people in the UK as part of the survey. The US and Canada, Japan, Brazil, Italy, Thailand and Mexico made up the top 10 dream holiday destinations if money was no object.
The findings form part of TripAdvisor’s bi-annual TripBarometer study in which 61,000 travellers answer questions about the latest travel trends, including spending and holiday plans.
While in reality most British holidaymakers holiday closer to home, TripAdvisor says that if money was no object, most people would like to travel as far afield as possible.
The results of the survey were released just days after the Duke and Duchess, and Prince George, finished their three-week tour of New Zealand and Australia which TripAdvisor predicts will result in a "huge tourism boost".
Increased hotel search
The UK hotel industry reported that search website Trivago showed a 70% increase in hotel searches for New Zealand and 32% for Australia following the royal tour. The largest increase was in Wellington where searches went up by 169%.
The Royal family was based in Wellington during the 10-day tour of New Zealand and visited seven other locations including Blenheim in the Marlborough region, Auckland, Hamilton and Cambridge in Waikato, Dunedin, Christchurch and Queenstown in the South Island.
Potential tourists have shown interest in following the royal itinerary through the North and South Islands including iconic tourist experiences like Shotover Jet, wine tasting in Queenstown, sailing on Auckland Harbour and visiting the world renowned Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre in Marlborough.
International enquiries have also centred on the two luxury lodges where the Royal couple stayed during their New Zealand tour. Matakauri Lodge near Queenstown and Wharekauhau Lodge in Wairarapa, north of Wellington, each hosted the Royals for private time during their New Zealand stay.
